Places of Attractions: Cherai Beach

Fort Kochi

Popular as the first settlements of the Portuguese in Kochi, it is a small village nearby the suburbs of the main city. The best part about visiting this spontaneous village is that you will get to see the colonial buildings on the coastline along with the famed Chinese Fishing Nets and several ships that sail around the Arabian Sea. The view of the glittering sun as it pierces through the fishing nets is truly majestic and memorable.

St. Francis Church

It was built in 1503 and has a momentous importance as it is the oldest European Church in India. It is a mute witness to the resist of the European regal in the subcontinent. The leftovers of Vasco Da Gama who passed away in 1524 was kept here for 14 years before it was taken to Lisbon, the now capital of Portugal. The construction which can be seen today was built to restore the original wooden structure.

Jewish Synagogue

Constructed in 1568 A.D., it heightened as a testimony for communal harmony in Kerala for centuries. The key attractions inside the premises of this synagogue are number of copper plates which are inscribed in Hebrew script and the Scrolls of Old Testament. They are preserved and protected inside the premises.

The Dutch palace

Popularly known as the Mattanchery Palace, it was constructed by the Portuguese and in 1555 it was accessed to the Raja of Cochin. Exhibit of dresses and Palanquins worn by the rulers of Cochin, ornaments the coronation hall while the middle courtyard seems extraordinary with a temple devoted to Pazhayannur Bhagavathi.

It was reconstructed by the Dutch so the name of the palace was kept with their name though original construction was done by Portuguese. The murals in here are the best examples of the Hindu temple art.

The climate of Cochin is classified as tropical monsoon and the best time to visit Kochi is from October to April, it is also the peak season where tourists from across the globe flock to this place to enjoy the colonial past and natural surroundings.
